Sea Gull: Working with Camera Raw

When I opened this image up in Camera Raw, it was immediately noticeable that the image is incredibly busy with all of the different shells and rocks. The full original image is of two sea gulls standing on a surface composed of small rocks and shells.

First, I changed the camera calibration settings to Camera Standard. Next, I went to adjust the white balance to balance out the blues of the bird with the orange of the rocks and shells using the Temperature and Tint sliders. I then adjusted the exposure, contrast, and levels with the Basic panel sliders. I further refined the levels in the Tone Curve panel by starting at Medium Contrast and then refining the sliders in Parametric. To add focus to the seagull and drown out some of the busy background, I used the Radial Filter tool and created a circle around the seagull. I set outside of the radial area to be less saturated, have lower exposure, have less contrast, and also have less clarity. I went in with the Adjustment Brush tool to give touch ups of exposure and saturation to areas afterward. Then, I cropped the image so that the seagull's head fell on a line of thirds in order to draw more focus to the bird.

Now, the image features a seagull standing on shells and rocks, but with more focus on the bird so that the clutter of the background is not overwhelming.
